POP (Post Office Protocol)

POP allows a Client computer to retrieve Email from a POP Server. It does not provide support for sending Email, which is assumed to be done via SMTP or some other method. POP is useful for computers without a permanent Network connection which therefore require a "post office" (the POP Server) to hold their Email until they can retrieve it. POP is older and less powerful than IMAP, which is used for the same application area.
