(2) Abstract

The final project is supposed to cover a mobile application all the way from the use cases to implementation issues. In this lecture, we look at the expected format of the project proposal and the different issues that need to be addressed in the proposal. Most importantly, the proposal has to contain a section on application design as well as a section on application implementation.

(4) Scope

Focus on something achievable
- final projects will not lead to complete applications
- we do expect some level of detail in design/implementation
- deciding what to do specifically can be hard
Try to not re-invent the wheel
- hard to do because there are many existing applications and services
- if there is competition, describe what is different

(5) Use Cases

Describe scenarios in which your application will be useful
- describe how it is useful for the end-user (black box)
- describe what the application/service needs to do (implementation)
- describe other necessary components (community or services)
Non-Use-Cases can be helpful as well
- describe scenarios that you are not targeting

(7) User Contributions

Activities where the application is useful
- describing typical scenarios/situations
- how might the application be useful in that specific case?
- how does this compare to a situation without having the application?
Several inputs are required from the user
- direct inputs in the form of data entry
- indirect inputs because of user context (e.g., time or location)
- 3rd party triggers (user arrives at a location)

(8) Application Contributions

What is the application doing as a black box?
- what are the inputs/outputs of the black box?
- list all required inputs to get to the proposed output
- do not assume some magic entity solving the hard part
Briefly think about scalability issues
- would it still work with thousands/millions of users
- does scale add value or cost or both?

(9) Community Contributions

Is there some form of community?
- if so, then the data model must include this as well
What is the community model?
- users are on their own
- reusing one of the existing networks (Facebook, Twitter, …)
- building a new network
How does the community provide input?

(10) User Interface Design

How is the user interface going to look like?
- different implementation choices result in different UI options
UI design should start with simple sketches and outlines
- design-focused proposals will need to develop specific UI designs
- implementation-focused proposals might focus on functionality instead

(12) Layer Cake

Technical descriptions should be layered
- Separation of Concerns helps to better describe scenarios
Data models help a lot to figure out the data structures
Behavior models help a lot to figure out the processes
Sophisticated models use many different diagram types
- UML [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unified_Modeling_Language] 2.2 has 14 diagram types [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unified_Modeling_Language#Diagrams_overview] to model systems

Implementation platform
- talk about the Mobile Applications Landscape [Mobile Applications Landscape] and where you fit in
What is the client side implementation using?
- list all client side requirements
What other implementation options exist?
- explain why some implementations might not work

(14) Server Side

Which services are provided by a server implementation?
What are the resources applications interact with?
- figure out the resource types
- figure out all relationships between these types
- figure out all interactions supported for each of the types
Looking at Flickr is a good starting point
- images are the first central resource type
- users are the second central resource type
- sets and collections allow users to organize pictures
- groups allow users to share pictures
- important additional details are tags, comments, galleries, …)
