Identify Five Dimensions

Assignment 1 — Principles and Patterns of Organizing Systems Spring 2011

Assigned: Tuesday, January 25th, 2011
Due: Monday, January 31st, 2011 6pm

Introduction:

Your task in this assignment is to identify five design dimensions/facets/issues that can usefully compare and contrast the scenarios described in today's assigned readings.

Instructions:

The Trant reading analyzes the traditional conceptions of museums, archives, and libraries and argues that as they increasingly provide online access to their collections they are generally converging in function and philosophy. But the other readings demonstrate that these categories are being stretched in all directions in organizing systems in diverse domains. Your task in this assignment is to identify five design dimensions/facets/issues that can usefully compare and contrast all of these variations so that each one can be described by a unique configuration of choices. You can choose these from the January 25 readings or invent your own. Define your dimensions/facets/issues clearly and prepare a table or visualization that compares the different organizing systems.
