Abstract

Based on the discussions of last monday, project ideas will be developed and teams will choose a project idea or develop a new one for the following two weeks. The goal for the teams is to develop a feasible road map until next monday, where they agree on the goals, the methods and technologies to reach these goals, and a workload distribution among all team members.

The Programmable Web

• These APIs use different technologies
  • for BPEL integration, a SOAP/WSDL interface is required
  • if SOAP/WSDL is required bot not provided, wrappers can be used

• Social networking based on music preferences
  • listening to music defines the identity of a person
  • data mining through the accumulated data gives interesting connections
  • data can be used for individual queries or for data warehousing

upcoming.org

• upcoming.org API
• Social events calendar based on user-submitted events
• Localized listings allow targeted event lists
  • very good support for localized retrieval
  • methods should be ideal to combine with Google Maps

Mechanical Turk

• Amazon Mechanical Turk
• Distributing tasks to humans (tasks which cannot be automated)
• Web service model rather than a concrete Web Service
  • tasks to be carried out by humans are defined as Web-based services
  • the Web-based service being called is the Mechanical Turk
  • to the programmer, the task can be handled like any other service
  • of course, these tasks may take a while to be completed

Google Maps

• Google Maps API
• The most popular API for integrating a mapping service and geo information
• Built for JavaScript and client-side integration
• May be used to complement other server-side services

Facebook

• Facebook Developers
• Facebook and other social networking sites have privacy issues
• Users often are not aware of how much information they make available
• Facebook could be used to demonstrate how visible people are
  • other candidates are Linkedin, openBC, friendster, orkut, or MySpace

Student Events

• A service where students can easily enter dates and events
• Items should be accessible as iCal events or RSS/Atom feeds
• Possible integration scenarios with Sylvia should be discussed

Course Calendar

• UCB needs personal data for faculty evaluations
  • bibliography data about scientific publications
  • memberships in societies and program committees
  • courses being taught
• Courses should be made available openly for everybody
• People can then select the courses they have taught

Next Steps

• Requirements for a Project
  1. integrate at least two other Web-based services
  2. use some kind of orchestration to implement the new service
  3. minimal UI and API should be provided
  4. team size should be 3 (±1), complementary skills are a good idea
