Abstract

The last day of the course is used for the course evaluation, project presentations, and a discussion about the course.

Mashes various mapping services in one Flash application
Application area is real estate service data
- retrieve real estate data from HomeGain as XML document
- display real estate data using a map display service
- provide a choice of map display services
Lessons learned
- keeping up with various APIs can be hard work (if they are evolving)
- using large XML documents in client-side code can be problematic

Combining last.fm and Technorati
- based on the musical preferences of a specific last.fm user name…
- … the latest news from Technorati are presented and can be browsed
Prototype went through two implementation stages
- PHP, which worked but could not provide more advanced features
- Ruby on Rails, which has better support in the programming environment

- the accessibility of data in various application environments is a problem
- privacy issues demand that the services should not be openly accessible

Support for local navigation based on global mapping
Combine Yahoo! Maps with local information (around UCB campus)
Implementation as a mashup using Yahoo! Maps
- Yahoo! Maps AJAX API and HTTP geocoding service for getting latitude/longitude
- PHP SimpleXML is used to extract the geocoding information
- MySQL DB locally stores address and associated geocoding information
