Exploring and building a more Semantic Web

Assignment 6 — Web Architecture Fall 2009

Assigned: Tuesday, November 17th, 2009
Due: Sunday, November 22nd, 2009

Introduction:

The idea of the Semantic Web promises to create a Web where information is more easily interpreted and exchanged. In this assignment, you will examine some of the efforts behind the Semantic Web, will generate some simple examples of rich Web content, and will discuss some of the concepts behind the Semantic Web.

Instructions:

Begin by reading and exploring the formats for semantic information that have been standardized and proposed:

Once you have explored those concepts, install and explore the Operator and Minimap Firefox extensions, make a decision regarding which of the above formats you feel is the most compelling or interesting for your experiments, and either add that format to a page on your Drupal site, or add it to a page of your choice elsewhere on the Web.

If there is a validator for the format you chose, ensure that the rich content you have created validates properly. If you use a format that the Operator or Minimap extension understands, ensure that the extension(s) is/are able to parse your microformat.

Finally, write a short essay explaining your choice of format, detailing how it compares to the other formats, and how it fits into the Semantic Web on the whole. Discuss your vision of the Semantic Web using the data you have published as an example, and where you think it will lead in the near or distant future.

When you have completed all of the above, please send links to your content, the validator you used (if applicable), and your short essay to mlissner@ischool.berkeley.edu.
