Computer Science is the science of building and engineering computers and computer-centric technology. Information Science is the science of handling information in a variety of contexts and application areas. This talk proposes Information Engineering as a discipline for bridging the gap between the computer-centric focus of Computer Science, and the abstract approaches of Information Science. A thorough and deep understanding of both the technical and the non-technical issues surrounding the Web are critical for anybody in an information-centric business. The Web needs T-shaped people to flourish, understanding both the broad social, cultural, and economical issues surrounding the Web, while also being able to design and implement systems and services which are open and extensible and scalable and thus can flourish based on the information fabric provided by the Web.
