A MIDlet is a MIDP application. Like an applet, a MIDlet is a managed application. Instead of being managed by a Browser, however, it is managed by special-purpose application-management software built into the device, often a cell phone or a two-way interactive pager. External management of the application makes sense in this context because it may be interrupted at any point by outside events. It would be poor behavior, for example, for a running application to prevent the user from answering incoming phone calls.
