MP3 (MPEG Audio Layer III)

MP3 is built into so many software and hardware products that it will remain in widespread use for a long time. Even though it is inferior in encoding quality to newer compression methods such as AAC, and even though it has no built-in support for DRM mechanisms, MP3 will not disappear anytime soon.
