WAP (Wireless Application Protocol)

The idea of the "Mobile Web", a way to access the WWW from mobile devices, appeared when the first data services for mobile phones (such as GPRS) became available. WAP was designed as the set of standards to reach that goal.
WAP1 failed because it was based on non-WWW standards. WAP2 is based on WWW and Internet standards and thus more likely to succeed.
